Writing

My whole life I've had a passion for hearing or telling a good story. Over the past few years I've indulged this interest by taking writing classes at George Mason University; one of the perks of my library job is free tuition. My background in acting and video/film production has had a lasting influence on my writing. After so many years of working with the written word in script format, my fiction tends to focus on dialog and plot aspects, with what some may call a "Hallmark ending," rather than on a complex and ambiguous stylistic format. I like something in every book I read but tend to enjoy the classics over contemporary Pulitzer works, but read just about anything. On my recent vacation I took along The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon, Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen, Faithless: Tales of Transgression by Joyce Carol Oates, and Bongwater by Michael Hornburg. Probably in the future I'll post a few words on whatever book I'm currently reading if anyone is looking for a good read.

The Empty Quarter: Here's my stab at the great American paperback. It's the story of a 17 year old exchange student visiting rural Connecticut in the year 1976, a kind of after school special where all the kids do what they're not supposed to do. Currently it's in a medium state of revision. To read a draft of the first four chapters click here.

FICTION

  • Army Brats:The story of a young teen's struggle to adapt to the social structure of attending high school on a military base.
  • Christmas Loss: the story of a romance between a social worker and a young woman with a secret past, with a "Hallmark" sappy ending.
  • Local: One of my earlier works, the story of a Virginia Beach redneck's encounter with two hispanic construction workers fishing by his house.

NON-FICTION

  • Sneakers and Cigarettes: The history of my running habit, how I trained over the course of four years for a marathon while not giving up all of my bad habits.
  • Teachers: A reflection on how my experience with drama teachers in high school and college has had a lasting effect on my life.
