The Watts Towers are a series of man made towers reaching about 100 feet made by an eccentric Italian immigrant construction worker named Simon Rodia between 1921 and 1954. In his free time he took bits of glass and pottery and infused them with concrete and steel wire frame. He abandoned his property and the project in 1955 after suffering abuse from his neighbors. After a concentrated effort by members of the community the area was established as the Simon Rodia State Historical Park, and the structure has been stabilized to withstand earthquakes and fenced in to avoid vandalism. The surrounding neighborhoods in South Central Los Angeles are those mentioned by the gangster rappers, and a likeness of the Watts Towers can be seen in the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
