No Gas in Arizona
Day 9: Monday August 18, 2003
Heading west the dry parched grassland turned to rocky scrub desert. There was an outlet mall in Palm Springs, which provided a good place for a rest and to stock up on discount Adidas hipster gear. This is where Douglas Coupland retreated back in the late 80's to write Generation X, one of my favorite novels. The place also became the setting for the work, the place of broken dreams and abandoned hopes. |

Palm Springs was supposed to be the next biggest thing back in the 50's. Halfway between LA and Vegas, it was developed as a convenient retreat for the gliterari in the days before every minor sitcom costar and rock and roll one hit wonder was able to afford a private jet. Franks Sinatra and all the rat pack used it as a retreat. After the 60's all the speculation died out and the place becoming a habitat for starving artists and retired Hollywood types on a budget. A place where someone pushing thirty could afford to sit back in the midst of an early midlife crisis and contemplate failed expectations. |

In the midst of Palm Springs is some sort of government-funded experiment in alternative energy sources. Along the highway and up the mountains are several hundred radio tower sized metallic white windmills catching the breeze, like pinwheels in vast sandbox. With one hand on the wheel it was hard to capture, but you can maybe see a hint of this in the blowup on the right above.

| The drive to Norm's was taking longer than expected. After filling up with fifteen gallons back in LA, the gas warning light didn't come on until thirty miles outside Tempe. Eager to catch up with my old chum, it was hard to surrender even a few more minutes, but this was a necessary diversion. At the next exit I pulled over and the gas station was surrounded by yellow police tape. The attendant gave me a curious look after inquiring within, "haven't you heard? A pipeline burst back at the border, there's no gas in the entire state until they can truck it in. Where are you coming from?" The last leg of the drive was done slowly without a/c, driving slowly with clenched teeth. | ![]() |
