Goldilocks and the Three Bears

This semester I took IS 425, Library Services and Programs for Children, in addition to my two required classes. We’re expected to take a certain amount of classes for activities, and I’ve had my share of information theory lectures, so it was a nice change of pace. In addition to all the research and papers, part of the class was to prepare a “family story time” including a picture book, finger play, and “flannel board.” A flannel board involves putting characters made of felt on a board coated with flannel as the story is told. I choose the classic “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” There was the inevitable thought, “what am I doing making cut out bears in grad school?” but it felt a lot less dubious than the sewing unit I had as a theatre major back in 93 (which was one of the moments that lead me to switch to communications at JMU). I think the bears were the best part, check out the “father bear” with the tie.

Goldilocks, the three chairs, and the three phallic beds.
The three bowls (with removable porridge action!) and the bear house
That's all for now kiddies, stay tuned for more stories from Fiencke.
