On the set of Six Feet Under

October 2004

My friend Adina from the Media Arts and Design days at JMU has been working for HBO filming Six Feet Under the past few years. When Jenny and Mandy came to town, also from JMU days, we got a full tour of the set. First time at a set, and it was quite a trip. The sinks worked, the fridges were full of Pepsi cans, and there were Fisher and Sons business cards up at the funeral home soundstage. I tried to nick one but they were all glued together. The outside of each set unit was made of planks, but they were fully decorated rooms on the inside, with windows open for camera shots and no ceiling so lights could be hung. 30 foot city landscape tapestries were posted on the opposite shooting angle outside of the windows, giving the illusion of an outside view.

So that’s what a Hollywood set looks like! Every movie and television buff should check one out sometime. It was great to get the unofficial tour, nice to know the right people in the right places!
