| Prince William Forest Park in Prince William County (named after the OTHER Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, 1721-1765) is a 15,000 acre National Park 30 miles south of DC. The area was originally settled soon after Jamestown in the early 17th century. Once farmed and the location of several small villages, the area was incorporated as a National Park in the 1930’s and allowed to revert to it’s natural state before settlement. The park is adjacent to the Quantico Marine Corps Base and parts are used for training. During high school I went camping here a few times, and sometimes at night it’s possible to hear artillery practice in the background. There are over 30 miles of trails, a few of which Beth and I took in on a lazy Sunday afternoon. |
