| This year the American Library Association conference was held in New Orleans and I flew in right after graduation. This was the first event at the infamous conference center since the hurricane. The downtown area and the French Quarter have recovered nicely, although some of the outlying residential areas are still piles of rubble and abandoned cars with no electricity, running water, or trash collection. I won a drawing amongst the ALA members at UCLA and was able to be a staff member, so I got free room and registration with an extra diem for doing some conference work. I got to meet most of the hundreds of vendors and got to unwind with my fellow graduates along exciting Bourbon Street. |
