This past semester I took IS 201, Ethics, Diversity, and Change in Information Professions, which had a volunteer “service learning” requirement. Four of my fellow classmates and I choose to work at Camp David Gonzales, a Los Angeles County facility for juvenile offenders. Over the course of the spring we organized a library for the camp, sorting and cataloging the collection, and arranging for donations. Working within any sort of prison facility can be a bit discomforting, but the students did show some hints of interest in the project, and apparently so far have been checking out books and looking at the magazines we organized.
