| We hit the Oktoberfest on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. This was supposed to be one of the less busy times, but the beer tents were all full after lunch. The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Kind Ludwig I of Bavaria and Therese Charlotte Luise of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The event has the feel of a county fair back in the US, with rides, food, and games. The locus of the festival is in the dozen or so beer tents, each representing a different brewery. We arrived around noon and hit the Lowenbrau, Hippodrom, and Augustiner tents. By five we had our fill and hit some of the rides. A couple of DC friends happened to be going at the same time, the more the merrier! Luckily that night we were able to get a decent room above an Indian restaurant for a mere 100 bucks a night, an insane bargain for Oktoberfest time. It put us in a good spot to take the train to Prague the next day. |
